Old photos of Decima MAS members wearing Panerai watches are always something very special. Not many photos are known and when completely new pictures surface, it's all the more exciting. Just recently I came across three fantastic "new" photos and I would like to share them with you.
Early operators from the Decima Flottiglia MAS utilized the Siluro a Lenta Corsa or "slow-running torpedo" along with Panerai dive watches. Starting in 1935, the Royal Italian Navy or Reggia Marina established one of the first dedicated undersea warfare units. Chapter I and II of the first volume (1930’s-1940’s) carry the history of a new weapon – the SLC slow running torpedo, called “maiale” – and the men who trusted on the watches from Guido Panerai & Figlio during their dangerous missions in deep and darkness of the mediterranean sea.For the famous Decima Flottiglia MAS frogmen from WW2, Panerai developed for the first time in their history wrist compasses which were essential to lead the frogmen to their targets in murky port waters.
