It is not a wait list but an interest list. Visit all ADs near you and just talk to them. After that you wait. Could be weeks, months, years, never. Uncertainty is a pain. But if the economy tanks, my feeling is that it will get easier to go the AD route. It is an actual list (unlike the "Rolex waitlist") so when your name comes to the top they'll contact you. You have a week to then get to Harrods and pick it up, and a friend can turn up for you. You're right about the green. The fact that you're buying next year is an ideal opportunity to get on the waiting list. You will not find a Sub at a London AD anyway. Go to watchfinder and try some on.
